Will the bed fit in your van?

The first question before any conversion: can I sleep crosswise, is there enough standing height, and what is left for kitchen and bathroom? Three answers from the real load area dimensions of your vehicle.

How it is calculated

The dimensions come from the same vehicle catalogue as the app: load area length, load area width at its widest point and interior height of the empty vehicle. Insulation and panelling are deducted, and for the floor the build-up as well. Five centimetres are added to body height for the sleeping length, because nobody sleeps right on the edge.

For the lengthwise bed the calculator also shows what is left over: the remaining length for kitchen, bathroom and storage, and the walkway width beside the bed. That is exactly what decides whether a floor plan works.

What the calculator does not know

The load area width applies at its widest point; between the wheel arches it is considerably narrower — so a crosswise bed has to sit above the arches. Bay windows or flares that some builders fit for a few extra centimetres are not taken into account. And the interior height is the bare height: ceiling panelling, roof vents and cabinets still come off it.

From dimensions to floor plan

In the app you draw bed, kitchen and bathroom to scale into your vehicle — including wheel arches, sliding door and roof taper, with collision warnings and weight.
