How much insulation do you need?

Roof, side walls, rear doors and, if you want, the floor: the calculator takes the load area dimensions of your vehicle and tells you how many square metres to buy — and what the insulation weighs before a single item of furniture is inside.

How the area adds up

The densities are catalogue values from the VanLogic app. Self-adhesive versions weigh more than the bare material: Armaflex AF 19 mm is listed by retailers at around 1.53 kg/m², while the calculator with a catalogue density of 60 kg/m³ gives 1.14 kg/m². If in doubt weigh a sheet and carry on with your own figure.

How it is calculated

The calculator lays four rectangles over your load area: the roof (length × width), two side walls (length × height) and the rear doors (width × height). The floor is only added if you tick it — many insulate it separately, with a different material and thickness.

Area = length × width + 2 × (length × height) + width × height [+ floor]
Weight = area × thickness × density

The allowance is added on top of that base area. It covers what the rectangles miss: sliding door, wheel arches, struts, offcuts when cutting. 10 % is a usable starting point; anyone who covers every strut individually will end up higher.

For reference: for the Ducato L2H2 the calculator gives 23.7 m² without the floor and with a 10 % allowance. An insulation retailer quotes 23 m² for the same vehicle — the two figures are just under 3 % apart.

What the calculator does not know

It works with rectangles, not with your vehicle: windows, a panelled-over sliding door or a high roof change the area noticeably. The side walls are not flat surfaces in reality but curve into the roof — sometimes it is more than the calculation says, sometimes less. And Alubutyl for sound deadening does not go on the walls across the whole surface, only on the large, resonating metal panels; the calculator always uses the full area, so scale the result down accordingly. For ordering: calculate first, then measure on the vehicle.

From square metres to total weight

Insulation is the first item that adds weight — and the last one people think of when calculating. In the app it sits alongside furniture, equipment and water, and you see immediately what is left of the payload.
