Wheelchair-Accessible Camper Van Conversion: How to Plan It Right

Every centimetre of corridor width and every centimetre of cabinet or control height decides whether the finished conversion is actually usable day to day, or not. In a wheelchair-accessible conversion, that logic partly reverses: open floor space is the function. Know the values, but make your own trade-offs deliberately instead of overlooking them.
Practical Points Beyond the Raw Measurements
Alongside the movement areas themselves, a few points have become established practice in wheelchair-accessible camper builds:
- A kitchen or table you can roll under. A kitchen block or table with legroom underneath lets you roll straight up to it with a wheelchair, instead of having to sit beside it.
- A wheelchair tie-down system. For driving itself, a wheelchair needs its own certified restraint โ that’s a safety question, not a design one.
- Sliding doors instead of hinged doors. They don’t need extra swing clearance, which saves exactly the floor space that’s usually missing for the turning circle.
- Access via ramp or lift. A cassette lift alone can easily weigh around 190 kg, smaller lift platforms tend to start around 70 kg upward โ this weight comes on top of the actual furniture build and should be part of your payload calculation from the start, not added as an afterthought.

The Underestimated Factor: Weight and Centre of Gravity
A wheelchair lift or platform almost always sits off-centre โ at the side door or the rear, often well away from the vehicle’s centreline. A component weighing 70โ190 kg that isn’t centrally placed has a noticeable effect on axle load and lateral centre of gravity โ far more than a single piece of furniture of the same weight placed in the middle of the vehicle. Anyone who doesn’t work this out in advance risks ending up with a genuine overload on one axle, or noticeably altered handling in corners.
