Before you drill the first hole, you make a decision that shapes the entire build: which tool do you plan with? That choice matters more than most people expect at the start — from the rough floor plan all the way to the final vehicle inspection.

The market for camper planning software has grown a lot over the last few years, but the tools differ fundamentally in what they can actually do. This comparison puts the four best-known options side by side, honestly — based on real feature differences, not marketing claims.

VanSpace 3D

VanSpace 3D is the strongest pure layout tool in this comparison: over 500 furniture and accessory items, 15+ vehicle chassis brands, and a first-person view that lets you feel tight spots and walkways before you ever pick up a saw. For pure spatial planning and visualisation, it’s very well made.

What’s completely missing: any form of weight, axle load, or centre of gravity calculation. You plan purely visually — whether the finished build is even roadworthy or legally registrable, you only find out once you’ve built it and weighed it.

Plan Your Van

A start with real products you can order: you plan in 3D with furniture and accessories from the shop and get an overview of the cost and weight of the products you pick. Handy for a first idea with a shopping list.

What’s missing: the weight of self-built furniture from material and build method, axle load and centre of gravity, and a check against wheel arch, roof slope or sliding door.

PlanMyCamper

PlanMyCamper was for a long time a free, German-language platform with a configurator and a weight calculator. Since 2026 it has been a guide blog: the planner and the weight calculator are gone, what remains are articles and a few calculators. For planning the build itself, it is therefore no longer an option.

VanLogic — the difference in detail

VanLogic isn’t a pure drawing tool and it isn’t a pure calculator — it’s both, permanently linked together. Every change to your layout immediately affects weight, axle load, and centre of gravity — not only once you recalculate it by hand.

Real vehicle dimensions and real vehicle structure

The vehicle database covers all common base vehicles (Ducato/Jumper/Boxer, Sprinter, Crafter/TGE, Transit, T5/T6, and many more) with real-world dimensions. Wheel arches, roof taper, and sliding doors exist as genuine geometric structure in the layout — not just as reference lines. Furniture that collides with this structure is flagged before you build it. The collision check also recognises hollow cavities in self-built furniture — a hollow cabinet that only overlaps a wheel arch on the outside while leaving it fully clear on the inside is correctly treated as collision-free, even for rotated, round, or L-shaped objects.

Multiple build methods for your self-built furniture

Self-built furniture isn’t just defined by shape and size, but by its actual construction method: solid, box with lid, box without lid, open frame, closed frame, frame with thin panelling, panel, or an angled box for sloped roof sections. Each build method has its own weight formula based on the real construction — a hollow box weighs like a hollow box in the app, not like a solid block.

The deepest self-build system on the market

Other tools either offer a furniture library to drag in (VanSpace 3D, Plan Your Van) or no self-build system at all. VanSpace 3D does allow free building from basic geometric shapes like cubes, cylinders, or planes — but with no connection to material or weight. In VanLogic, the self-build system itself is the basis for the weight calculation: eight build methods (solid, box with/without lid, open/closed frame, frame with thin panelling, panel, angled box), freely selectable material with its own density for the carcass, panelling, shelves, and fronts, additional drawers and doors that each affect the weight, and multi-part assemblies that you can freely combine and save as your own reusable template. On top of that comes Freeform: instead of a rectangle, L-shape or cylinder, you draw the real outline of a piece of furniture – with a wall leaning along the bodywork, round corners and cutouts for the wheel well, and if you like from behind or from the side. The key point: the weight stays correct with these shapes too. A cutout deducts exactly the panels it hits – with lining, the new panels are added back. A leaning wall is calculated with its sloped length, a round corner with its arc. That way, the same kitchen block over the wheel well of a Ducato weighs 53.9 instead of 54.8 kg, and the collision warning is gone. Automatic weight calculation — never manual

The weight of every object comes from its shape, dimensions, material, and build method. You never type in an estimated kilogram figure — that’s the central difference to all three other tools in this comparison.

Axle load, centre of gravity, and tipping risk, live

As you plan, you see the current front/rear axle load distribution, the centre of gravity, and a warning for critical tipping risk in real time. Move a piece of furniture, and everything updates instantly.

Realistic 3D with X-ray view and exploded view

Your plan stands in 3D with light and shadows, just as it will look in the van. X-ray mode makes furniture see-through so you can check cavities and shelves, the exploded view pulls assemblies apart into their parts, a figure shows the proportions, and labels name every part. In Studio you can also step into the van at eye level – standing or sitting.

Ready-made templates instead of starting from zero

If you don’t want to start from scratch, load one of eight complete build templates – from a weekend basic build to a full-time layout. The furniture adapts to your vehicle: the bed sits over the wheel arch, whether short or long wheelbase. Measure distances, align exactly

Every object shows its distance to another one on all three axes – and you simply type in the distance you want. So the base cabinet sits exactly 5 cm next to the wheel arch and the wall cabinet flush above the worktop.

Electrics, insulation and water with weight

177 components in 14 categories come with real dimensions and weights – including batteries from 100 to 300 Ah, inverters up to 3000 W, DC-DC chargers, solar charge controllers, rigid and flexible solar panels and cable per metre by cross-section. Twelve insulation materials calculate with their own density as area times thickness. Anything you don’t want as a part in the plan still counts towards the payload. You play the fresh and grey water tanks through full versus empty.

Rear, roof and underfloor

Bike rack and tow bar at the rear, roof box, solar and awning on the roof, gas tank under the floor: things mounted outside are in the plan too, count towards the axle load and are checked for collisions.
