Camper Van Furniture: Solid Block, Closed Box, or Frame with Panelling? Build Methods Compared

“Furniture โ with or without a frame?” is one of the most debated questions in every camper van conversion forum. The short answer: it depends on which piece of furniture you’re building. The longer answer is that it’s not just those two options โ and the build method you choose usually decides your final weight more than the material you choose.

Two camps, one misunderstanding
In practice, two rough camps have formed: solid construction, where furniture is built entirely from continuous, usually 12โ15 mm thick boards โ sturdy, simple to build, but heavy. And frame construction, where a slim batten frame carries the structure and a thin board only forms the outer skin โ noticeably lighter, but more involved to build.
The misunderstanding: many self-builders pick ONE of the two methods for the entire conversion. But practically no van build needs just one build method. A kitchen base cabinet, a bed platform, a wall panel and an open shelf all have completely different requirements for stability and load โ and therefore a different sensible build method. The build methods at a glance
Solid Block โ the footprint is completely filled with material, no cavity. The heaviest, but also the simplest to build. Sensible for small, shape-defining parts: table legs, bed posts, cushions, or a mattress used as a placeholder for weight calculation.
Closed Box โ a closed box with bottom, lid and side walls, hollow inside. The classic solid-construction box from the forum quote above: sturdy, plenty of storage, but also the heaviest of the hollow models, because full wall thickness stands everywhere.
Open Box โ like the closed box, just without a lid. For open compartments, drawers without a separate cover, or shelves that should stay accessible from above.
Frame (open) โ just the corner posts plus one upper and one lower connecting ring, completely open in between. Like scaffolding or a shelf frame. By far the lightest model for anything that doesn’t need a closed surface.
Frame (closed) โ a continuous, solid perimeter wall without a bottom or lid โ like a classic bed-base plinth or a slatted-frame base. Visually similar to the open frame, but noticeably heavier, because the walls run all the way around instead of only standing at the corners.
Single Panel โ a single, flat board with no further structure. For worktops, table tops, or wall/ceiling panelling, where there’s no real “build method” question โ only area ร thickness counts.
Frame + Panelling โ the app’s version of the “frame construction” quoted above: a slim batten frame carries the structure, a thin board only forms the outer skin. You can even choose different materials for the frame and the panelling โ a sturdy pine frame with a light poplar-plywood skin, for example. In real van conversions, this is by far the most common build method for cabinet furniture, because it saves noticeable weight without losing stability.
Custom / Manual โ for anything that doesn’t fit the patterns above: a freely chosen number of stacked boards or battens, e.g. for a self-built platform made of individual slats.
For furniture under a sloped roof, there’s also the Slanted Box as a shape variant โ it works like the Closed Box, only with a sloped instead of a flat top edge, so the piece fits exactly under the sloping roof.
Which build method fits which piece of furniture?

Extra details that make the decision even more precise

Why “decide once” is the wrong approach
A full van conversion often consists of 15โ25 individual pieces of furniture. Build everything solid because it’s the simplest to build, and a clearly two-digit kilo amount of unnecessary weight quickly adds up across the whole conversion โ weight that goes directly against your payload and, in the worst case, leads to an overloaded van. Build everything consistently in lightweight frame construction instead, and you lose unnecessary stability on furniture that genuinely needs to carry load (bed box, bench seat).
The sensible strategy: decide for each piece of furniture individually which forces actually act on it โ and choose the build method accordingly, not based on what’s easiest to build right now.
